Wings

Wings is a game concept created by Elliot Forrest and myself for a college project. The game world is a place where the people live on floating islands in the sky and the technology and the styling reminiscent of a 1950s era.

Early Concept

The first thing that I started to model for this project was an Airport that had been converted from an old train station. The main idea behind this was that the people had been forced to adapt to living in the sky, with air travel being the main form of transport.

Early Concept of the Airport/Train Station

I wanted the building to look like a rather old structure but with modern elements. I looked at a few different stations and came across a couple that had an old Victorian style wall as the main entrance and then lots of metal girders and piping to form the rest of the structure. Here are some early renders of the Airport/Train Station.

The next stage of the project was the designing and modeling of a vehicle. As aviation was a key theme in the initial concept I wanted to create an aircraft. I wanted my design to be something that was huge in size with kind of retro style to reflect some of the fantasy elements of the game concept.
Early Concept of the Albatross
While creating this concept I looked at lots of different aircraft. I took inspiration from lots of different places but the shape of the Boeing 377 supper guppy was a key influence toward my final design.

Once the key assets had been modeled and rigged it was time to finish the rest of the environment and start animating. At this point we were quite short for time and so had to cut out some of the details from our original concepts, but here's what we came up with.

For this project we used a combination of Maya, Mudbox, Photoshop and After Effects. For more info on the project check out Elliot's blog http://elliotforrest.blogspot.co.uk/
